Oak Creek Brewery and Grill's Beginnings

In 2001 Fred Kraus, our brewmaster, decided to combine his well established brewing skills with his partners food industry skills, to open Sedona's only brew pub in the beautiful Arts and Crafts Village of Talaquepaque. Here he and Jim Strelau, Head Brewer, work to brew our premium beers such as Forty-Niner Gold Lager and Horseshoe Hefeweizen right here in the Grill. These magnificent beers are stored in the burnished copper serving tanks behind our shining oak bar. Our display kitchen permits you to see the rotisserie and wood fired oven used to prepare your servings as well as the house specialties, 'Rotisserie Chicken and Pork Ribs', and 'Fire Kissed Pizzas'. Our beer and food are offered to you in a scenic setting intended to make your dining and drinking experience fun with just a dash of old world charm thrown in for good measure.

Once each month the Oak Creek Brewery & Grill donates food to the Meals on Wheels program at the Sedona Adult Community Center as shown on the left being delivered by one of their volunteers.

We are also sponsors for the Sedona Rotary Club and the Sedona Marathon and we donate to the Humane Society of Sedona, the Veterans Day Golf Tournament at the Oak Creek Country Club in the Village of Oak Creek and the Verde Valley Sanctuary.

Oak Creek Brewery's Beginning
The Kraus family came to Sedona in 1993 with all their worldly goods and a dream, to brew great fresh beer the way Fred learned at the Gasthausbrauerei Hufeisen, or Horseshoe Brewery, in the picturesque village of Pottenstein, Germany. The dream became reality when they opened the doors of Oak Creek Brewing Co. in west Sedona.

Since February 1995 Sedona's only Microbrewery has been known to locals and tourists alike as the place to enjoy delicious handcrafted brews in a relaxed, unique setting.

Recent Awards
The success of Oak Creek beers is well known to beer enthusiasts.

In 2011 The Oak Creek Brewing Company's Snake Charmer IPA was the silver medal winner at the Great Arizona Beer Festival

Oak Creek Brewing Company recently claimed a bronze medal in the Brewer's Association World Beer Cup 2006, a global beer competition that evaluates beers from around the world and recognizes the most outstanding beers being produced in the world today.

Head brewer for OCBC, Jim Strelau, was present for the Gala and Awards Ceremony at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle on April 14. He was presented the bronze medal in the strong ale/lager category for Oak Creek Brewing Company's "Old Knitker Kicker", a 140 schilling Wee Heavy scotch ale with pronounced malt body and notes of whisky and peat smoke topping out at 11 % alcohol by volume. "This is one of our favorite limited release beers to brew for the winter season. It's a real winter warmer, but caution is in order... It'll make your ears red!"", stated OCB( owner, Fred Kraus.

In 2003 the Horseshoe Hefeweizen received two prestigious gold medals. It was the Gold medal winner at both the North American Brewers' Association and the 22nd annual Great American Beer Festival. A traditional unfiltered Bavarian wheat beer with aromatic hints of banana and clove. This beer is made with up to 50% wheat malt instead of all malted barley, which lends a lighter note. It is deep gold in color with a very low hop bitterness level and a dense head of white foam. It is traditionally enjoyed as the summer beer of choice in Bavaria and pairs well with appetizers, pizza, chicken, fish and pork.

In 2002 the Forty-Niner Gold Lager was a Gold medal winner, North American Brewers' Association. This is a rich gold-colored lager with a crisp hop note. it maintains its zest and balance of hops and malt from start to finish. It is a cold lagered and naturally carbonated all-malt beer that is very versatile and can be enjoyed alone or with nearly any type of food.

Also in 2002 the Village Nut Brown Alewas a Bronze Medal Winner, North American Brewers' Association. This northern Arizona favorite has a consistent nutty flavor with just a hint of spice in its depths. A slowly emerging bitterness crops up along the way and is unobtrusively incorporated into the smooth flow. It finishes with a gentle nuttiness and spiciness. Excellent with steaks, chops and ribs!

In 2001 the Oak Creek Amber Ale was awarded the Silver Medal by the North American Brewers' Association, a recognition that sets Oak Creek apart from hundreds of micro beers.

Spunding: A Reason for their Success
Fred says, "What really makes our beer better is our use of spunding. Less than fifteen percent of brewers use this natural carbonation process that produces finer bubbles that impart a smoother taste. This focus on quality has assured the Oak Creek Brewing Co. of wide distribution of its keg beer.

Retail Distribution
In 1999 a bottling line was added to enable distribution of packaged product through grocery and liquor store outlets. Today more that 461 stores in 59 towns and cities throughout Arizona carry Oak Creek Beers. Click here to find a store near you.

What to look for in a beer:

  • The flavor of the beer should be malt sweet on the tip of the tongue and hops bitter on the back of the tongue. The aftertaste should be neither sour nor harsh.
  • The color comes from the types and amounts of malts used. Malts that have been roasted to varying degrees of darkness are used in small amounts to add color to the beer.
  • The aroma of the beer should contain the sweet smell of malt balanced by the flowery aroma of hops. Ales have an additional fruity smell that produces a more complex aroma.
  • The body of the beer is it's "mouthfeel" or degree of heaviness. As the beer passes over your tongue it will feel anywhere form light bodied or watery to full bodied or chewy.
